Academic Health Science Centres (AHSCs) are partnerships between universities and NHS organisations that bring together expertise in research, education, and patient care. They are designated by NHS England and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) for their excellence in these areas.
AHSCs work to improve health and care services by translating scientific research into benefits for patients. They do this by funding research, educating healthcare professionals and providing high-quality patient care with the latest treatments and technologies.
Since April 2020, eight AHSCs have been designated in England for a five-year period including UCLPartners.
Moorfields is a founding member of UCLPartners, a leading academic health science centre that supports the healthcare system serving over six million people in parts of London, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Essex. Through UCLPartners, we are working together to improve health outcomes and create wealth for the local population at scale and pace.
Our director of research and development, Professor Sir Peng Tee Khaw, is the programme director for the eyes and vision theme of the UCLPartners, which aims to drive forward translational research programmes targeting the blinding diseases that pose the greatest burden to patients and society, and to increase our capacity and support for high-quality research programmes.
